A prototype of Microsoft’s Surface Laptop has leaked, revealing that it contains Intel’s upcoming Lunar Lake chips.

Earlier this year, Microsoft launched the Surface Laptop 7 without Intel chips, opting instead to promote Windows on Arm with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite processors. Now, it appears a Surface Laptop with Intel’s latest Lunar Lake chips might be on the horizon for next year.

A prototype of a Surface Laptop recently surfaced on the Chinese second-hand marketplace Goofish, featuring what seems to be an Intel Core Ultra 7 268V processor. Though the listing was quickly removed, Windows Central spotted it. It’s unclear if this laptop is a variant of the Surface Laptop 7 or the upcoming Surface Laptop 8.

The prototype label etched on the device confirms its authenticity, making it unlikely to be a fake despite how easy it is to alter CPU listings in Windows. It’s uncommon for unreleased devices like this to leak or be listed for sale online.

If Microsoft is exploring Lunar Lake chips for the Surface Laptop series, it could offer Intel-based models for users seeking access to Copilot Plus PC features. The Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6, launched earlier this year with Intel’s Meteor Lake processors, lacked the NPU needed for these features and were mainly aimed at businesses, missing the updated designs of the Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7.

The listing hints that the unannounced Surface Laptop may be released in 2025, possibly coinciding with an announcement at CES 2025. However, it’s also possible that Intel-based Surface devices will continue to be limited to commercial customers. Microsoft has not yet commented on the leaked prototype.
