Google is integrating Spotify with its Gemini AI assistant.

Google is integrating Spotify with its Gemini AI assistant.

Spotify now supports Google’s Gemini Extensions, enabling users to search for and play music through the AI assistant using natural language commands. Initially discovered in the Google app’s code in June, this feature is now rolling out to compatible Android devices, as reported by 9to5Google.

Gemini allows users to play music based on song titles, artist names, album names, playlists, or specific activities. However, it currently does not support creating playlists or radio stations on Spotify. If you’ve linked another music service, such as YouTube Music, you’ll need to specify your preferred service during your first request, after which Gemini will default to the last-used service.

Spotify is the second non-Google app to integrate Gemini features, following WhatsApp, which introduced Gemini support in October.

According to Google’s support page, using the Spotify extension requires linking your Spotify and Google accounts and enabling Gemini Apps Activity, which retains AI query history for up to 72 hours. The extension isn’t available within Google Messages, the Gemini web app, or the iOS Gemini app and currently works only when Gemini’s language is set to English.
