YouTube’s premium subscription prices are set to rise for long-time subscribers with legacy plans in more regions. Last December, YouTube informed U.S. subscribers with older YouTube Premium plans, originally from Google Play Music or YouTube Red, that they would need to switch to the current rate of $13.99 per month starting in the new year.
In a statement to The Verge, YouTube communications manager Paul Pennington confirmed that prices will rise for both YouTube Premium, which removes ads and includes music access, and standalone YouTube Music plans for new and existing subscribers in multiple countries, including Bulgaria, Costa Rica, Estonia, Spain, Finland, and Turkey.
Subscribers who originally joined through Google Play with a discounted rate will get an additional three months at their current price before the increase. One Reddit user on a legacy plan originating from Google Play Music, before YouTube Music’s launch, reported their rate in Spain rising from 7.99 to 10.99 euros, which is still less than the 12.99 euros charged to new subscribers of the standalone music plan.
