Microsoft has discontinued its $1 Xbox Game Pass trial just ahead of the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 on October 25th. The 14-day trial was removed on October 8th, preventing new users from accessing the Black Ops 6 campaign without committing to a full month of Game Pass.

Microsoft initially halted the $1 trial for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass in March last year but reintroduced it later with a reduced 14-day limit instead of a full month. Before the launch of Starfield in September, Microsoft also temporarily removed the trial, so its latest removal isn’t unexpected. With Black Ops 6 on the horizon, the company likely hopes to increase Game Pass subscriptions without the impact of a low-cost trial.

Earlier this year, I reported that Microsoft had been considering whether to include new Call of Duty releases on Game Pass, concerned that the typical high sales of the franchise—often over 20 million copies at around $70 each—might be undermined by Game Pass availability. A $1 trial could further affect both sales and subscriptions.

Additionally, Microsoft is set to bring Black Ops 6, Modern Warfare III, and Warzone to Xbox Cloud Gaming later this month, marking the first time a Call of Duty title will be available on the cloud platform at launch, following Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
